Lost Already!

This morning we awoke to blue skies and NO GALES! Of all weather conditions, I think gales have to be the worst, and when mixed with rain, or sleet – as they were one day this week – it even tests my love of walking the dogs. It’s rather too cold to feel like spring, but so many bulbs are producing good shoots that it lift’s the heart.

Last evening I really got down to the job of sorting out a timetable for the Granny Trek. Gathering together all the information so kindly sent by walkers along the route, I found the best place to be was on the floor, as three OS Landranger maps spread out at once is too much for any of our tables! John Andrews’ directions from Lowestoft to Bury St Edmunds are excellent. He’s even sent me two books, one by the Ramblers’ Association on The Angles Way and one produced by John and his wife Jean on The St Edmund Way. This last is a delight, filled as it is with Jean’s artistry. I look forward to meeting them in early June.

Without doubt, the most elusive section so far is Bury St Edmunds to Cambridge. Joe Moore is valiantly attempting this for me, but he says the most direct line would involve a lot of road walking. This is to be avoided at all costs – not only because I hate it, but I must think of Rudi’s and Fritz’ paws. Joe has suggested going up to Ely and then down beside the River Cam to Cambridge. This would obviously take two to three days, so I’d need to be able to link up with Julia for pickups. I knew I’d regret not carrying a tent, but unless I have a little trolley made for the dogs to pull, I fear it’s not on!
