Amazing mapping!![]() Trying to establish my timetable with a map measurer was proving a very slow task. Also there were still two gaps in the route from Bury St Edmunds to Cambridge and from Bedford to Stratford upon Avon. I sent a plea for help to www.walkingworld.com and within a couple of days this most kind company had sent a Memory Map of the sections needed, plus a DVD to help us generally understand digital mapping and GPS, both as a contribution to Granny Trek. The problem of creating a timetable is now solved – it’s just incredible. As the route is plotted, the number of miles walked is calculated and also the time it takes. Way points can be labeled and with the 3D effect, the terrain is brought to life. It’s so fascinating that Tony can’t leave it alone! He’s quite peeved that it’s been downloaded onto my computer and keeps trespassing on my territory to have a play! Armed now with the local information sent by my new friends along the route, plus an accurate timetable, I’m feeling very confident that Rudi, Fritz and I will find our way and be at rendezvous points on time. We still hope to get local knowledge on the last section plotted on the Memory Map and then I can begin contacting towns and villages to see what support we will have on our journey in the summer. |
